Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of volunteers in a community mental health center using a phenomenological study.
Methods: Data was collected through an in-depth interview from December 2007 to July 2008. Individual interviews were conducted on the subjective experiences of 9 volunteers. Data was analyzed through Colaizzi¡¯s method(1978) in which meaningful statements were extracted.
Results: Four categories emerged from nine theme clusters. The Four categories were: ¡®Understanding of the community mental health service¡¯, ¡¯Getting rid of prejudices about the mentally ill¡¯, ¡¯Self maturity¡¯, and ¡¯Recognition of Volunteering¡¯.
Conclusion: These results indicate that volunteering in a community mental health center could help people¡¯s perception towards mental health disorders to be less prejudiced and could help others to become more interested in community services for people with a serious mental illness. The implications and suggestions of this study are discussed.
